“Kuhara”-
In the summer of 2007, the 3 of us (Myra, Margaret, and Sherri) spent the summer in Kenya using our time assisting the staff at Into Abba’s Arms Orphanage care for the children as well as helping with other needs in the community. As is often the case when Americans travel outside of the U.S., we each had our own struggles with various illnesses while living for the summer in a 3rd world country. One day it was Myra’s turn. As she was in the bathroom, experiencing some particularly violent stomach and intestinal disturbances, Margaret decided to play the guitar to drown out the noises of….well you know…the violent stomach and intestinal disturbance sounds. As Margaret was playing the guitar, out of the bathroom Myra began singing, “Kuhara*, Kuhara, you’re not my friend”. Trying to make a bad situation into something to laugh about, we wrote the song entitled “Kuhara”. Throughout the summer, as different U.S. volunteers would be in the bathroom with their own stomach/intestinal disturbances, it was not uncommon for the 3 of us to show up outside of the door with a guitar and hand drum, and serenade the inflicted person until they were laughing as much as groaning.
So, even though some may think that singing about diarrhea is just not polite, we disagree. We think it is more important to learn to laugh about it, sing about it and be thankful when the “kuhara” is gone!
We hope you enjoy this unique take on a subject which is not often discussed. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the song “Kuhara” will go toward our efforts to return to Kenya and assist with care of orphans at Into Abba’s Arms (intoabbasarms.org) and with the work of International Treasure House Ministries (treasurehouseministries.org).
*Kuhara is the Kiswahili word for diarrhea.
